Meet the Leadership Team

Prior to joining SSG in 2008, Andrew served with the Royal Engineers and this experience combined with other construction related skills has provided him with the aptitude required for his role within SSG. He has recently taken on the position of Training Coordinator to run alongside his training and consultancy role. His experience and qualifications in the field of construction make him a vital member of the SSG team.

Andy joined the SSG Service Delivery team as a Trainer and Advisor in 2021. He began his career completing an apprenticeship with Coventry City Council as a Carpenter and Joiner before joining the Royal Engineers where he served for 23 years all over the world. On transition to civilian life, he has worked across the Middle East and Asia in various Security and Construction Project Management roles. When he returned to the UK, Andy continued to work across the construction sector in various Project Management positions, all carrying health and safety responsibilities. He has also worked as an Intelligence Officer in the Maritime Security and Travel Risk sector where he carried out analysis and mitigated risks from maritime crime and piracy. Andy holds a Level 6 Graduateship in Leadership and Management and a number of other professional qualifications.

At SSG Barry delivers a number of construction courses including NEBOSH, CITB and various bespoke CDM courses. He is also an experienced consultant, advising clients on health and safety compliance and helping develop bespoke safety management systems. As well as this he is a Chartered member of IOSH and a Member of the Association for Project Safety. Prior to this Barry had a full career in the Royal Engineers, which was followed by him becoming Managing Director for a health and safety consultancy within the construction industry. During this time he acted as a specialist CDM advisor to clients and designers for a variety of projects within various sectors and sizes of construction projects. He also set up a number of training accreditations to deliver IOSH and NEBOSH training courses. In his spare time Barry is an active member of Yealm Gig Rowing Club and enjoys coastal walks with his dog and the family.

Darren joined SSG in 2007 as a health and safety consultant specialising in construction and construction-related trade organisations. As part of the Service Deliver team Darren provides compliance reviews, advice and site safety assistance to directors and senior managers of a range of organisations. He also has responsibility for developing internal systems to deliver the highest levels of customer service to our clients.Darren originally worked in the construction industry up to Contracts Manager level after completing his degree in Construction Management and the Environment.

David joined SSG as a First Aid Trainer. Prior to this, he spent ten years in the bookbinding industry, leaving to join the Civil Service for 25 years. Following this he moved into the private ambulance sector for ten years achieving his Emergency Medical Technician and FREC3 qualifications. He spent 13 years in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and 13 years in the Youth Cadet Force, during which he was the Senior First Aid Instructor.

Derek has worked with SSG for a number of years as our Lead First Aid Trainer and Assessor. Having a background in the leisure industry he has been involved with the general public for much of his working life. This has helped him in his training career being able to engage with delegates. Initially, training in the area of pool lifeguards, he took a further interest in first aid and pursued a career within health and safety. Having a grown-up family, he now enjoys DIY and holidaying.

Jon has joined the Service Delivery team as a Trainer / Consultant. Prior to this, Jon has had an extensive career. He served in the Royal Navy as a Submariner during the 80s, within the tactical systems branch. Following this he joined British Rail within the Signalling and Telecoms department, repairing and maintaining electrical and mechanical lineside equipment. He then moved into various health and safety roles working and being based across most of the UK as a health and safety specialist and manager. These roles have enabled him to attain many different skills on a number of largescale construction projects. Jon has always played and followed rugby and is a season ticket holder for Exeter Chiefs. He also likes to keep fit, going to the gym and walking, messing around on powered boats or kayaking. On top of all of this, Jon is also a volunteer with English Heritage.

As part of the SSG team, Jon delivers a range of health and safety training and consultancy services. Before joining SSG, he served 22 years as a Royal Marines Commando serving on military operations across the globe. He has also worked as the health, safety and environmental manager in the construction industry and as a SHEQ manager. Outside of work, Jon regularly goes on walks with his family and their staffy called Clubz. As well as this, he enjoys road and mountain bike cycling.

Justin joined SSG in 2022 as a Health and Safety Trainer / Consultant, delivering a range of training courses.He began his career in the Royal Navy for 15 years before moving into the Oil and Gas Industry. Here, Justin worked for 23 years as a Health and Safety Advisor to the Drilling industry in countries across the globe, but primarily in the Middle East, India, Far East and Africa. As well as this he worked as a global trainer delivering leadership and skills training internationally. He has also achieved TechIOSH status.In his spare time Justin likes to cycle, walk and go travelling in his new campervan. He also loves a good boogie and is often described as the all-round entertainer and comedian of the group!

Kathy focuses on training across a wide range of subject areas including environmental, health and safety and mental health. She has a passion for training and enjoys the challenge of delivering a wide range of courses for SSG.Her career has focused on training in various roles, and as such Kathy has previously delivered training all over the UK, Jamaica and Nigeria. Her initial role was engaging with youth training but this led to training adults and engaging with businesses across the Southwest. She has also spent 17 years working in the Caribbean where her main focus was implementing environmental projects, including writing a marine park management plan which was funded by USAID.Kathy is a qualified Master Scuba Diver Trainer and with her extensive diving history she has spent the equivalent of six months of her life underwater. In her spare time, she enjoys walking, photography and is waiting for her new puppy to arrive!

Miles joined SSG initially as a construction site advisor before becoming a full-time trainer who specialises in asbestos, fire safety, and general construction courses. He is also one of SSG's main NEBOSH tutors and coaches delegates who prefer to carry out training via distance learning. Prior to this, Miles served for 13 years in the Royal Engineers.In his spare time, Miles is a keen gardener and a regular participant at cold water swimming, which he actively encourages others to do for its mental health benefits!

Paul joined our Service Delivery team as Consultant, Trainer and Site Advisor, having worked in the construction sector as a Senior Contracts Manager responsible for numerous multi-million pound projects. He has extensive knowledge of the build environment, balancing both the commercial and health, safety and environmental aspects of the role. Paul is passionate about sharing his experiences in business and making a positive change to companies and individuals attitude to health and safety management.

At SSG Rob provides a range of health and safety training and consultancy services to our clients.Prior to this, Rob gained a degree in Occupational Safety and Health. As a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner, he has over 20 years' experience in health and safety including in manufacturing, leisure, construction, farming, waste management, retail and food production. He has also previously worked as a local authority health and safety inspector.In his spare time, he likes to spend time with his partner Sarah and springer Wenna, enjoying all that Devon and Cornwall has to offer.

In Stephen's role at SSG, he will be delivering a range of health and safety training courses to our clients. Stephen has a vast background beginning with 29 years in the Royal Marines and followed by a move into health and safety consultancy, delivering services throughout the UK, Europe and Africa. This was inclusive of NGC / IGC as well as the full range of IOSH / CIEH / UKATA accredited courses, aimed mainly to oil and gas organisations. More recently, he worked as the Head of QHSE for a global maritime security company, where he had overall responsibility for the quality management system. His main responsibility was to maintain conformance and compliance to ISO standards 9001:2015, 14001:2015, OHSAS 18001:2007 and 28007:2007 certified by Lloyds Register. During his career, Stephen has become an IOSH Technician, and gained qualifications including NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, NVQ 4 in Management and Lloyds Register Internal and Lead Auditor. Having spent the majority of working life away from home and family, his spare time is predominantly linked to his four grandchildren and their activities, as well as being the bank of 'Grandad'!

Terry joined SSG in 2013 as a health and safety consultant. Prior to this, he has spent many years working in the construction industry. Initially from a trade background, he progressed into construction management, then construction safety management before becoming a health and safety consultant. In addition to considerable experience in the construction safety management field, Terry has broadened his experience into other industry sectors including the care sector, hospitality and agriculture.
