A new advice line for businesses to support employees experiencing or at risk of domestic abuse has been launched by domestic abuse charity Hestia. The advice line has been launched following an increase in the number of people seeking support for domestic abuse throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. The charity saw a 47% increase in the number of victims seeking information and support.
The advice line called Everyone’s Business is designed to assist managers in supporting employees who disclose domestic abuse and to signpost them to the support services in their local area. The helpline provides access to information, resources and practical guidance.
The reality for many employers is that they may have employees today who are enduring domestic abuse and these individuals see their workplace as a place of safety which provides an opportunity to access support services. But with many employees continuing to work from home there is an increased risk that victims may be prevented from accessing support in the workplace.
The charity recommends that employers publicise the advice line and any support they can offer to victims which might include:
- Re-deployment to a different location
- Paid leave
- Advance on wages (especially where an employee is planning to leave an abusive relationship)
Such steps will help create a culture where employees are more willing to disclose their experience to their manager.
For victims of domestic abuse, the helpline number is 0808 2000 247.
For someone in immediate danger then always call 999 first.
For employers the advice line is 07770 480437.
