SSG’s defibrillation initiative helps another organisation! 

As an organisation we have always valued positive impacts for local communities. This is why this year we launched a new initiative to support local community groups by supplying them with defibrillation units. 

As part of this, we have pledged that from every delegate booked onto a first aid course, £1 goes towards funding defibrillation units for community groups and organisations. This means that every time someone signs up for one of our first aid courses they are contributing to a life-saving cause in more ways than one. 

Earlier this year we presented a defibrillation unit to Teign Valley ‘Men in Sheds’ project who were so grateful for the donation. Now, we have been able to collect enough funding to buy a second unit to support another local organisation. The latest beneficiary of our defibrillation initiative is the Yealm Gig Rowing Group. 

Barry Wolstenholme, one of our Senior Health and Safety Trainers, presented the unit and said “It’s a great feeling to know that every time a delegate books a first aid course with us it’s going to help someone and an organisation. I’m thrilled that we get to help groups like the Yealm Gig Rowing Club and look forward to seeing who we can help next!”

SSG’s seventh Annual Conference marked as best one yet! 

This year we held our popular Annual Conference on Thursday 5th October. 

Each year we hold a conference for our health and safety, HR and ISO ADVISOR members. Through these we are able to provide them with latest updates on new legislations and information relevant to their organisations. It also gives delegates the chance to network with each other and SSG team members, as well as ask those thought-provoking questions! 

The conference started with three of the SSG Service Delivery team. Starting with Tim Harnett, Head of Consultancy, providing a health and safety update featuring statistics from the HSE as well as case studies. Manuela Grossmann, Head of People Services, gave employment law and HR updates before the first half was finished by Adam Worth, Head of Learning, with an interactive health and wellbeing session, giving an insight into mental health at work and a better understanding of conditions people may be facing. 

We were also lucky enough to have to guest speakers present. Dan Tolman from British Solar Renewables discussed health and safety climate and culture at work as well as focusing on an interesting incident that happened at his organisation. Peter Buscombe, an Inspector from the HSE, spoke about HSE’s priorities and initiatives and the drive they have on mental health over the next couple of years. 

The morning was finished off with one of our health and safety trainers, Shaun Davis, who previously worked as Fire Officer for Devon. Shaun was able to share his knowledge on fire compartmentation and examples of previous fires over the years he’s worked on. 

Our conference this year has proved to be a huge success in providing members with knowledge, ideas to take to their organisation and networking opportunities. We look forward to continuing to support our members and enhancing our services in the years to come.

Midweek Masterclass - October 

As an organisation we are always looking for ways to improve employee wellbeing and create a strong sense of community within the team. As a way of achieving this we have implemented our monthly SSG Go Walking event, which combines low intensity exercise and team bonding.

As part of our SSG Wellbeing initiative, working in line with our Wellbeing Forum, our SSG Go Walking event is open to all employees, as well as their families and furry friends. Organised by team members, Laura and Sarah, previous walks have taken them to locations including Sheepstor, Cann Woods and Saltram House, often featuring pasties and treats.

The walks currently take place after work but as we move into Autumn and Winter, they will be scheduled for Sundays to avoid darker evenings and encourage more to attend. 

SSG Go Walking has had a good turnout from both staff and family members, and whilst we often have our regular attendees, we are also seeing an increase in new participants each month. Keep an eye out on social media for pictures from our next walk on Wednesday 27th September!

Laura Haylock commented “SSG go walking is a great opportunity to get out, blow away the cobwebs and enjoy the beautiful surroundings we have on our doorstep in Devon. It’s not just about walking; it’s about creating a healthy, happier and more connected workplace and a great way to build new friendships. Everyone is welcome and we have tried to plan a variety of routes to suit all fitness levels!”

How can events improve your employees’ wellbeing?

Events like these can significantly enhance employees’ personal wellbeing as they create lasting memories, enabling walkers to enjoy nature and nurture their connections with others. These relationships, can extend into the workplace, contributing to employee satisfaction and collaboration across different departments. 

It is important to remember that employee satisfaction isn’t just about workplace tasks and responsibilities; it is about ensuring a healthy work-life balance and creating a positive wellbeing culture amongst your workforce. 

Want to implement changes in your workplace? You could start by creating a Wellbeing Forum. Forums allow you to gain different perspectives from those “on the ground” regarding elements of your organisation as well as collating ideas on future activities. Encouraging your senior management teams to take a step back, listen, evaluate employee satisfaction and act shows the importance you place on your employees and their wellbeing. Have a think about what you can do for your staff in the run-up to Christmas!

SSG Podcast - Anxiety - May 2023

We have recently completed exciting developments at our head office in Plymouth, in a bid to become a fully sustainable training centre.These developments have included the installation of 230 solar panels on the roof of the building, which generate up to 96kw of electricity to supply the building and the six new electric charging points installed in the car park. We also have a new secure bike store with the aim to encourage employees and delegates to cycle to work. Our fleet of electric cars is continuously growing, currently at three fully electric and two plug-in hybrid cars. Some of these projects were supported by Workplace Travel Grant which was made available by Plymouth City Council through the Department of Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund.Internally, our entire business processes have been reviewed through our recent achievement of a fully integrated management system incorporating ISO14001, 45001 and 9001. These international standards set out the criteria for systems the business needs to implement to ensure effective management of health, safety, environment and quality, whilst maintaining focus on continual improvement.Recent investments in technology have supported the development of a range of online / hybrid training courses, enabling delegates to attend training without having to make the commute. This makes upskilling employees more efficient as well as encouraging others to do their bit to help the environment. Big sustainability drive for SSG

We have begun a new initiative to support local community groups with the provision of defibrillation units.As part of the scheme, £1 from every delegate booked onto a first aid course with SSG will be put towards funding a defibrillation unit for a local community group.With over 1400 delegates booked to attend first aid courses since the initiative began, our first defibrillator was donated to Teign Valley ‘Men in Sheds’ project at the start of the year.A defibrillator is a device used when a person is in cardiac arrest. It gives high energy electric shocks (defibrillation) to the heart of the patient and is essential in trying to save the life of a person in cardiac arrest. Derek Paul, First Aid Lead at SSG, said of the scheme: “This scheme is great to encourage more communities to gain access to a defibrillator. Whilst we hope they won’t have to be used, there is only a short period of time in which someone has to save a life and a defibrillator can be instrumental in doing this. We’re supporting local community defibrillators!

Each year the conference is run for our Health &amp; Safety, HR and ISO Advisor members. The event is a chance for members to hear updates on current or newsworthy topics and ask our consultants their burning questions.We decided this year to run an online event to ensure all members still had access to the much-loved Annual Conference even if they were unable to leave their office or home.Head of Training, Adam Worth, started the event by updating delegates on recent changes to NEBOSH qualifications in 2021 / 2022 whilst Tim Harnett provided guidance on the safety challenges in a post-Covid world. Manuela Grossmann closed the event with advice on building resilience in the workplace. All talks were received very well by delegates with plenty of questions being asked by all.The event ended with a celebration of over 40 Advisor members reaching the 10th&nbsp;anniversary of working in partnership with SSG.
