SSG receives Lord Lieutenant’s Award for Armed Forces Support

We are honoured to have been awarded the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award, for our continued support to members of the Armed Forces community within our employment; being one of only 16 organisations in the South West region who have been selected to receive the award in 2018.
Mark Salmon, Director of SSG, and Tim Harnett, tutor and consultant at SSG, attended Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the County of Devon’s Awards on 4 October at Huntsham Court where they were presented with the Silver award. We previously received the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme Bronze Award for our ongoing support towards the Armed Forces community.
We signed the Armed Forces covenant in 2017 making a promise to the nation to ensure those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly. We have also endeavoured to provide support in the employment of veterans young and old, service spouses and partners as well as supporting our own employees who choose to be members of the Reserve forces and offering support to local cadet units in the community and schools.
The Scheme recognises the different levels at which local employers demonstrate notable support for people from the wider Defence Community and allows the Ministry of Defence to publicly thank and honour these organisations. Receiving the Silver Award means that we have met specific criteria, including signing the Armed Forces Covenant and actively demonstrating support by employing at least one member of the Armed Forces Community – whether a Reservist, Cadet Forces Adult Volunteer, Service Leaver or Military Spouse.
We are proud that our team consists of several consultants and trainers with a forces background. Miles Redhead, Andrew Naish and Tim Harnett served in the Royal Engineers with Tim Harnett continuing service as a member of the Territorial Army Reserves. Gemma McDonald served with the Royal Navy and Ian Tagg served first with the Defence Fire Service and then with the Royal Navy.
We are also approved as an ELCAS and CTP training provider, having delivered training to Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Air Force and Army personnel in the last 12 months for both resettlement purposes and ongoing career development.

The winners should all be proud of the life-changing impact and fresh opportunities they are providing to our Reservists, veterans, wounded injured and sick and their families. We’ve seen a record number of winners this year, which shows that the Armed Forces family talent pool is also providing tangible business benefit.”
