A recent IOSH article focused on how the majority of employees surveyed say they cannot handle more stress.
Business advisory company CEB found that 55% of workers surveyed said they would not be able to cope much longer with the stress of their jobs.
The growing stress on employees is due directly to the reduced workforce, which has led to the remaining workers being forced to take on added responsibilities, according to the survey.
Even with the growing stress, employers are expecting to increase the bottom line not by adding new employees but rather by getting more out of their current workforce. Employers are requiring an average 20% increase in output from their staff and only a third of them think their workers are now producing at peak capacity.
As a result of this disconnect between the two sides, the CEB warns employers that they probably will fail in meeting their growth gains if they do not examine both their workplace structures and the skills they teach their workforce.
"Employers must consider what skills employees require to work in environments where they are faced with more complex human networks and more detailed information. It's also critical to adjust management networks to target technology investments to help employees perform," CEB said.
