Confined Space Awareness
A number of people are killed and injured in a confined space each year. ‘Confined Space’ is a term used in safety regulations that refers to an area where cramped conditions make it dangerous. It is an area with a small entrance or opening that is large enough for someone to enter and work. This one day ‘open enrolment’ course is designed for all persons that are engaged in confined space activities. The course covers legislation, hazards and risks and the practical use of Escape Apparatus and safe access / egress of a confined space. The delegate will also receive guidance to meet the requirements of the Confined Space Regulations 1997.
Course Attendees
This course is suitable for those training to work in the water industry, seeking employment or work or engage in any capacity where awareness of safety in confined spaces is required.
NOTE: Delegates must be medically fit and healthy and have reached the age of 18.
Delegates are required to bring to the course proof of ID in the form of a valid UK driving licence, passport or CSCS card.

This course covers legislation, hazards and risks as well as the practical use of escape apparatus and safe access / egress of a confined space. The delegate will also receive guidance to meet the requirements of the Confined Space Regulations 1997.
Confined Space Awareness will only qualify the attendee to work in a low risk confined space and that will be dependant on site rules.
For larger groups, this course can be presented at the client’s workplace.
Course Duration
SSG offer this course over one day in partnership with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue and Red One.
Course Programme
- Knowledge of legislation current to working practices and confined space regulations
- Knowledge of problems relating to gases and gas detection
- Personal protective equipment and hygiene
- Permits to work and safe systems of work
- Practical exercises in working in confined space, search and rescue
- Set up and practical use of access equipment and escape sets
Training Certification and Assessment
Delegates are assessed during and at the end of the day and particularly during practical exercises. Certification is provided by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue and is valid for 3 years.
