Course Attendees

This combined course is for those who are training to work in the water industry or seeking employment, or work engaged in any capacity where competency in high risk confined spaces is required. It is also for those working as part of a rescue and recovery team in confined spaces, or those working as a technician on a standby rescue team.

NOTE: Delegates must be medically fit and healthy, have reached the age of 18 and be clean shaven. Candidates will be wearing harnesses and the safe working load of our working equipment is 136kg.

Delegates are required to bring to the course proof of ID in the form of a valid UK driving license, passport or CSCS card.

The City & Guilds Training Scheme 6160 is the water industry standard. All water companies participated in the formulation of this scheme to ensure that training quality is consistent and accepted nationally.

6160-03:

The course incorporates the use of self-contained breathing apparatus and is designed for persons working in NC Level 4 high risk environments as specified below

  • NC4 classification: Non-standard entries involving complete operations which introduce additional risks and require specific controls and rescue arrangements e.g. mechanical hazards, physical complexity of the system introduced hazards, enhanced specific intrinsic hazards. Full breathing apparatus (working) requested to be worn at all times.

6160-08:

This course includes preparing to carry out emergency activities, entering and exiting confined spaces safely, using emergency equipment, casualty recovery and handling devices in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications, rescuing and recovering casualties, following procedures, and working safely.

The aim of this course is to reflect the national occupational standard (NOS) for controlling entry and arrangements at a confined space. This unit covers both water and non-water industry areas:

  • Water – this may include working with potable water, sewage treatment process, drain and sewer cleaning operations, or where the operative is working in or near water, or where a confined space is subject to surface water flooding.

  • Non-water – this may include pharmaceutical petrochemical, asbestos removal, vehicle manufacture and servicing, aeronautical, construction, communications, power, utilities, gas, electrical and mechanical engineering, and some elements of work operations in mines, quarries and tunnelling.

6160-03:

  • Prepare to work safely in high risk confined spaces

  • Enter and exit high risk confined spaces safely

  • Use equipment and tools safely

  • Follow working procedures and work safely

  • Deal with emergencies

  • Understand the principles of working in high risk confined spaces

  • Understand standard protocols for working in high risk confined spaces

6160-08:

  • Plan and prepare emergency operations for rescue team

  • Mobilise a rescue team and direct entry and exit to the confined space

  • Monitor a recue team to ensure procedures are followed

  • Understand the principles of working as rescue team leader

  • Understand the rescue team leader duties and responsibilities

Training Certification and Assessment

Assessment is via practical observations and written exams. Delegates who complete this combined course will receive City & Guilds certificates which are valid for three years.
