This course is suitable for managers, supervisors, safety representatives and health and safety advisors working within the process industries, both inside and outside the UK.

It has been designed in particular for those working in process industries such as oil and gas refining, chemicals, plastics and pharmaceutical manufacturing. It is not, however, for chemical and process safety engineers experienced in the specification, design and maintenance of process plant.

Note

It is recommended that learners have an underpinning knowledge of health and safety issues, and many will have gained another NEBOSH qualification e.g. NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.

Delegates should have a standard of English whereby they can both understand and articulate the concepts contained in the syllabus. It is recommended that learners have reached a minimum standard equivalent to an International English Language Testing System score of 6.0 or higher in IELTS tests.

The NEBOSH HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management provides delegates with a breadth of knowledge and understanding, enabling them to contribute to the management of process safety risks.

Those who hold this NEBOSH certificate have practical knowledge that brings real value wherever they operate. As a result, employers will have qualified people to manage activities, ultimately leading to a safer workplace, preventing loss of life and reputation and protecting valuable assets Employers can also achieve international standards and the certificate can help win new business.

The syllabus has been developed by NEBOSH in conjunction with the HSE and is based on published HSE guidance.

SSG offer this course over four days as a classroom course.

In addition to classroom-based study, delegates will be expected to undertake 20 hours of private study time.

Unit PSM1 is made up of four elements:

• Process safety management

• Management process risk

• Process safety hazard control

• Fire and protection emergency response

Through these elements, delegates will learn:

• Process safety management system establishment

• Asset management and maintenance strategies

• Safe start-up and shutdown of process plant

• Performance standards for safety critical systems and equipment

• Hazards and controls for chemical reactions; bulk storage of dangerous substances; fire and explosion

• Purpose and features of emergency plans
