Winning back trust after a company restructure or difficult organisational change

Published Jul 04, 2022

Due to the impact of Covid, many businesses have made difficult decisions that have affected the morale of their employees. Changes may have been successful from an operational standpoint, but has it left a bitter taste in the mouths of employees and created a disengaged workforce? How can you reengage your workforce and gain back their trust to create a more productive and profitable business?

  • Understand that rebuilding trust and engagement takes time and ongoing commitment – this is not something that can happen overnight.
  • Think about setting up ‘listening’ or focus groups or use online feedback tools.
  • Talk through the problems the organisation is encountering. Ask your employees why they think things are not working and prompt them to put forward ideas for improvement.
  • Listen to and adopt several employee suggestions – don’t be tempted to implement what you personally think will work better!
  • Identify ‘change champions’ from various levels across the organisation to demonstrate you are listening and wish to involve your workforce.
  • Understand you will not be able to bring along 100% of employees with the change. Some individuals, no matter how much work you put in, will not be able to adapt to change.
  • Create project groups or working parties to help progress suggestions made – make sure they are on board and understand the reasons for the change and the benefits it will bring.
  • Create an open culture and be honest about the company’s financial position and how it can be improved.
  • Tell the story – give regular company-wide updates on improvements, exciting developments or regularly communicate how the future is looking brighter and more secure (only if this is the case of course).
  • Congratulate and praise your workforce and their part in any changes, celebrating successes!
