Gen Z employee's sickness is higher than older colleagues

Published May 31, 2023

Research by Health Shield has found that employees aged between 18 and 24 struggle more with their health than other groups of workers. The findings showed that those aged 18-24 were on average sick 3 days more per year than older colleagues.

This age group all took the most time off for mental health issues. Whereas those aged 55-64 rarely took time off for mental health issues.

The research may indicate that either younger workers are struggling with their mental health more than their peers or it may be that they are willing to disclose that their mental health is the cause of their absence.

A significant contributory factor could be worries over finances. 44% of 18-24-year-olds responding to the survey said they worried about money on a daily basis. The cost of living and debts from time in further education are likely to increase their worry.

9 out of 10 people in the age group also said that the cost of living crisis is a greater worry than Covid had been. The cost of living problem and the Covid pandemic combined over the past 3 years have caused a level of uncertainty for younger workers that employers need to consider.

HSE data from 2021/22 highlights the concerns over mental health with stress, depression and anxiety found to be the leading causes of work-related ill health.

The impact on mental health is also seen amongst millennials (aged 27 to 42) of whom nearly half reported in research that they had previously left a job due to burnout.
