SSG are reminding local companies of the dangers posed by extreme weather conditions and in particular, the challenges facing those involved in work related driving.  With the Met Office forecasting heavy snowfall this winter, it is advisable that local employers have systems in place to carry out risk assessments in order to judge if journeys are necessary.

SSG is urging bosses to ensure employees are not making unnecessary road journeys.  ROSPA have indicated that approximately 20 people are killed and 250 seriously injured every week in crashes involving someone driving, riding or otherwise using the road for work purposes.  Work related road risk is a major issue for employers and must be managed in the same way as any other health and safety risk.

Top tips from SSG relating to driving in icy or snow weather related conditions include; ensuring all windows are thoroughly de-iced before a journey, travelling slowly around corners and steering gently and carefully to avoid skidding.  Furthermore, it is critical that your tyres are in good condition, with a minimum of 3mm of tread.

As conditions can change suddenly at this time of year, ensure your vehicle has a number of essentials, such as; ice-scraper and de-icer, clothes, high-visibility vest, warning triangle, mobile phone - for use when parked only, torch and map, blanket, warm clothes and boots, food and drink, first-aid kit and a spade.
