It is recognised that the best leaders understand the importance of influencing others to help them achieve their own goals. This is the influence that comes from emotional intelligence and where communication is used so effectively that the other person will say “yes” to what you ask them.
Influencing skills develop over time and with practice. Here are a few tips on how you can influence others to achieve the outcome you seek:
Be confident - you need to believe in yourself and your skills first if you want the team to believe in you. Consider how you project yourself upon others. Stay calm and controlled and use your confidence to manage emotions in challenging situations. This will boost your credibility and reliability in the eyes of your team leading to their trust in the longer term.
Empathy - understand how your team members think and operate. Use your social skills to help you uncover the needs of your team members and identify how to motivate them to reach their full potential. Actively listen to what your team say to you as this will help you build strong relationships through trust and a shared purpose.
Communication style - identify your communication style and adapt it to meet the needs of the whole team and not just those who communicate in the same way as you.
Set high expectations for your team - challenge team members to achieve higher standards and levels of performance each year. This will move employees out of the comfort zone and stretch them to achieve performance improvements that will benefit the individual and the organisation.
Maintain a positive outlook - focus on the positives by adopting a solution orientated approach to work. Lead by example and inspire your team with a “can do” attitude. This will lead to a culture where your team embraces change and innovation.
