Employers Rebrand Training as Apprenticeships to Access Levy Fund

The introduction of the apprenticeship levy last year should have brought much needed support for SMEs, providing the opportunity to access training for staff at a low cost. Instead, the rules surrounding the scheme are complicated and investment restricted to national apprenticeship schemes, which are not always appropriate or applicable, particularly in niche industries.
Now some employers have decided to abolish their existing training schemes and instead implement formal NVQs in order to access the funding.
According to recent research conducted by the CIPD, this now has the effect that older staff will suffer, since internal schemes have been replaced with the age restricted government qualifications.
