SSG 2nd Annual Conference

SSG 2nd Annual Conference

  • Date: Tuesday 24th October 2017

Our 2nd Annual Conference was held on Thursday 19 October at Exeter Racecourse, and we are proud to say it was a huge success!

The event was open to members from our Advisor schemes. Four of our operations team, as well as a special guest from the HSE, gave talks on a variety of Health and Safety and HR topics.

Paul Browne opened the event with his presentation on Occupational Respiratory Diseases; highlighting the large scale of the problem and the impact of such diseases on the lives of the individuals affected and their family and friends. He was followed by Julia Bone from the HSE, who outlined the HSE’s Work Plan and Dealing with Consequences of Accidents at Work.  The morning session ended with Adam Worth introducing Mental Health First Aid; discussing how to identify any warning signs, and supporting and dealing with employees with mental health issues in the workplace.

The second half of the conference saw Director Dr. Michael Cash present ‘Lessons from Tragedies’, where he discussed the Alton Towers ‘Smiler’ ride accident of 2016, and the main Health and Safety issues that contributed towards the accident. To end the day, our HR Advisor Manuela Grossmann spoke to our delegates about Absence Management and the rights companies have when dealing with potential absentees. She also gave delegates an update on Employment Law. Following each set of presentations, the floor was opened to questions regarding the subjects discussed, as well as broader Health and Safety and HR issues.

The presentations concluded with a special thanks to all those who attended and a celebration of those members that have been part of and supported the Membership scheme for 10 years including; Cannings, Abbey Systems, Hatchplan, Lovelock and Mitchell, Mantracourt Electronics, Unicraft and W T Flockhart.

Our ISO Consultant, Chris Prior, was also available throughout the day to discuss ISO services in more detail and give our members the opportunity to win a bottle of bubbly for completing the quiz.  The quiz featured a variety of questions regarding the different types of systems.  The winner of the quiz was Ian Morgan from Tons of Tiles; congratulations and we hope you enjoy the bubbly!

Once the conference had finished, refreshments were provided along with the opportunity for members to network with each other, as well as to ask SSG team members and presenters any questions.

Rick Williams of Cornerstone Housing commented that, “When one attends a day like today, one hopes that it will be both enjoyable and informative, but also thought provoking – and certainly that’s what SSG achieved today. The section that I found particularly interesting was the section on Mental Health – of course that’s clearly a topic that the HSE are pushing currently and as a construction employer we are increasingly interested in”.

Mel Standlick, organiser and leader of the Marketing Team, said “Thank you to everyone that came along and attended our 2nd Annual Conference. It’s been a really wonderful day with lots of great feedback and presenters addressing some of the current hot topics, so just a big thank you to everyone for attending!”

Building on the successes of the last two years, we look forward to seeing all our members at our 3rd Annual Conference next year!
