SSG Supports Hidden Killer Campaign
- Date: Monday 2nd November 2009
SSG Training and Consultancy have today announced the introduction of a new training course to their portfolio focusing on the dangers presented by asbestos in the workplace. The announcement comes in line with the Health and Safety Executives re-launch this week of their awareness campaign entitled ‘Asbestos: Hidden Killer’.
The campaign, which first began in October 2008, was developed to increase awareness levels regarding asbestos risks. To keep the messages hitting home, HSE is running a similar campaign this year which will aim to help tradesmen and maintenance workers know when they might be working with asbestos and what they can do to protect themselves.
Asbestos-related diseases account for around 4000 deaths a year, the biggest single cause of work-related deaths in Great Britain. More people die as a result of exposure to asbestos than in road accidents.
Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006, mandatory training is required for anyone liable to be exposed to asbestos fibres at work (see regulation 10). This includes maintenance workers and others who may come into contact with or who may disturb asbestos (eg cable installers), as well as those involved in asbestos removal work.
SSG Training and Consultancy can provide a range of training courses focusing on the dangers of Asbestos, which includes UKATA approved ‘Asbestos Awareness’ training. The new course entitled ‘Asbestos: Working with non licensed products’ will be rolled out in January 2010 and there are already a number of places reserved on the course.
