Risk management makes a real difference in today's workplace. Self regulation driven by the Health and Safety at Work Act has led to vast improvements: a safer and healthier working environment; safer road, rail and air transport; safer machinery and process safety; higher standards and range of personal protective equipment - the list doesn't stop here.
There are many ways of developing a career in health and safety management although most require some level of study as the breadth of knowledge required is very wide-ranging. To be a well rounded safety professional you will need to understand principles of physics, chemistry, engineering, construction, manufacturing and fire prevention, to mention a few subject areas.
For many employers and individuals the National Examining Body for Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) has become the preferred way to gain the technical knowledge required to manage safety in their own industry. With over 30 years experience offering health, safety, environmental and risk management qualifications in the UK, and exams taken in over 90 countries worldwide, NEBOSH are at the top of their game.
Amongst a wide range of studies offered, key qualifications include the NEBOSH Diploma, General Certificate, Construction Certificate and Fire Safety Management. The courses follow a modular / unit based approach that gives flexibility and allows professionals to:
• Build technical knowledge over a period of time whilst at work
• Sit all written and practical examinations in one go
• Spread studies and examinations over a longer period of time
• Choose to study a single unit e.g. to gain specific knowledge or for CPD purposes
The NEBOSH Certificate awards are the foundation level 3 qualification for any manager, supervisor or employee with day to day responsibilities for the management of health and safety. This equates roughly to an 'A' level. These qualifications are widely acknowledged as the first step towards a career in health and safety and are accepted by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) in meeting the academic requirements for Technical Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH); the first step towards chartered membership.
NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
The Diploma is a level 6 qualification and the flagship NEBOSH award. This equates roughly to a 'degree' level. It was the first UK vocational qualification to be developed specifically for health and safety professionals and builds on the knowledge of the General Certificate. It is intended for those seeking a successful long-term career as a health and safety professional.
Since its introduction in 1988 it has become established as the most popular qualification of its kind, with over 10,000 students gaining the qualification. A NEBOSH survey in 2014 established that over 95% of successful students would recommend the qualification to others.
Benefits of Success
The benefits of holding a NEBOSH qualification include:
• Demonstrable credibility and technical knowledge
• Use of the letters 'DipNEBOSH' after your name
• Entitlement to membership of IOSH (TechIOSH / GradIOSH), the first steps to becoming a Chartered Health and Safety Practitioner (CMIOSH)
